Reel types

Wooden reels

Most empty reels in a yard are wood, but they are not all the same reel. Whether a wooden reel is nailed, plywood or glued decides almost everything about where it goes.

  1. Nailed solid wood

Two plies of boards nailed at 90 degrees, with a stave drum. This is the build manufacturer programs ask for. Service Wire requires nailed wood with a 30 to 72 in flange, and AFL nailed wood with flanges at least 1-1/2 in thick and 30 in across. Sound ones are refurbished and reused, so this is the reel with value.

  2. Plywood

Flanges cut from sheet, for lighter loads and building wire. AFL's program says no plywood reels are recyclable through it. Sound plywood reels can sometimes be reused, but most go to wood recycling.

  3. Glued or laminated

Built for one trip. No program we list accepts them. They go to wood recycling.

What passes inspection

The wood programs agree on the details. Scuffs, dents and weathering are fine. Rot, warped flanges, broken flange boards, a damaged arbor hole or torn-out drive holes are not. Service Wire and AFL want about 75% of the drum staves intact, and Prysmian's "good reel" has 90%.

What a wooden reel is worth

A wooden reel is usually one-way packaging. Southwire lists its wooden reels as non-returnable with no deposit, so nobody owes you a credit for it. Its value is reuse: a sound nailed reel in a common size, in volume, is stock for someone who winds cable. One reel alone is rarely worth a truck. A few dozen of the same size can be.

Where the rest goes

Reels past repair are wood waste. Recyclers typically grind them for mulch, bedding or fuel. Strip leftover cable and ask whether nails and steel hubs need to come out. See nailed vs plywood vs glued for the thirty-second yard check.
