Empty reels on fibre and telecom builds

Fibre builds leave fibre cable reels and conduit reels at every staging yard. Prysmian, CommScope and AFL publish return routes for theirs; consolidating across crews is how you hit the minimums.

Updated

A fibre build doesn't produce reels in one place. Every hub, cabinet route and drop crew empties reels at its own staging yard, and the yards close as the build moves on. The reels themselves are a mix of fibre cable reels from one or two manufacturers, conduit reels, and the odd reel of copper or power cable. The programs below are the ones with published terms. Each has its full entry in the directory.

Fibre cable reels

  • Prysmian Reeloop (telecom): Prysmian reels only, wooden reels over 40 in. Free when the reels are empty and good; a fee may apply for leftover cable or if more than 10% are bad. Minimums run 80 reels at 45 to 54 in, 60 at 58 to 72 in and 40 at 78 to 84 in. The service covers the East Coast, Midwest and South, and you request it through the Alesea Smart PickUp portal. Details.
  • CommScope: approved vendors by reel type (wood, composite, steel). You need a full-load quantity, photos and dimensions. Non-CommScope reels and cable disposal cost extra. Details.
  • AFL: free full-truckload pickup of nailed-wood reels through Sonoco EcoReel, mainly in the East and Midwest. No plywood, and flanges must be 30 in or more. Details.

Conduit reels

HDPE duct often ships on large metal reels that the conduit maker wants back. Blue Diamond's program takes 48 to 120 in metal reels from 50 flanges up. Reels can be assembled or taken apart (Blue Diamond puts a truckload at up to 16 assembled reels or 80 disassembled), but must be empty of conduit with all their bars. Details.

Hitting the minimums on a moving build

  1. Pick one consolidation yard per region, and have crews bring empties back on their return trips instead of leaving them at the cabinet.
  2. Sort by manufacturer as reels arrive. Mixed piles are what make returns fail.
  3. Track counts by brand and flange band against each minimum. Prysmian's bands are a good template even for brands that only say "full truckload."
  4. Pull leftover fibre stubs before the reel joins the pile. Leftover cable is what turns a free pickup into a fee.
  5. Clear the remainder: reels from brands you'll never reach a minimum with, unlabelled reels and reels that failed inspection. Request one pickup for those.

Questions

Does Prysmian take back fibre reels?

Prysmian's Reeloop Telecom Reel Return Service collects its own wooden reels over 40 in, for free when empty, in the East Coast, Midwest and South, with minimums of 40 to 80 reels depending on flange size.

What about HDPE conduit reels?

Conduit makers run their own programs. Blue Diamond, for example, takes back its metal conduit reels from 50 flanges, with free pickup and no credit or a per-inch credit if you pay freight.
